Boshan (Chinese: 博山) is a district of the prefecture-level city of Zibo, located in the central part of Shandong province, People's Republic of China. Formerly a county-level city, Boshan was incorporated as a district of Zibo in 2015 as part of an administrative restructuring aimed at streamlining governance in the region.
Geography
Boshan District occupies an area of approximately 1,300 square kilometres (km²). It lies on the western bank of the Taihang Mountains and is traversed by the Little Yellow River (Xiaoqing River), a tributary of the Yellow River. The district's terrain is a mix of low hills and plains, with an elevation ranging from 30 to 250 meters above sea level.
Population
According to the 2020 national census, Boshan District had a resident population of roughly 800,000 people. The population is predominantly Han Chinese, with minority groups including Hui and Manchu present in small numbers.
Administrative divisions
Boshan is divided into several subdistricts, towns, and townships. The district government is seated in the Boshan Subdistrict, which serves as the primary urban center.
Economy
Boshan has an industrial base that historically centered on metal processing, especially steel and copper. The district also hosts chemical manufacturing, machinery production, and textile industries. In recent years, local authorities have promoted diversification toward high‑technology and service sectors, including logistics and tourism.
Transportation
The district is served by major highways, including the G22 Qingdao–Lanzhou Expressway, and is connected to the national railway network via the Zibo–Boshan railway line. Proximity to Zibo's urban core provides access to the Jinan Yaoqiang International Airport, situated approximately 70 km to the north.
History
The name "Boshan" (博山) translates roughly as "extensive mountain," reflecting the area's mountainous terrain. The region has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, with archaeological sites indicating early agricultural activity. Throughout imperial Chinese history, Boshan belonged to various administrative units within Shandong. In the 20th century, it became known for its metallurgical enterprises, particularly during the early years of the People's Republic of China.
Education and culture
Boshan hosts several secondary schools and vocational institutions that support the district's industrial workforce. Cultural facilities include a public library, community centers, and museums that showcase regional history and traditional crafts.
Climate
The district experiences a monsoon‑influenced humid continental climate (Köppen Dwa), characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Average annual precipitation is about 630 mm, with the majority falling between June and August.
