It originated as a work colony established by the charitable organization Maatschappij van Weldadigheid, which aimed to alleviate poverty through agricultural settlement. In 1907, the hamlet received its current name—Boschoord—in honor of Johannes van de Bosch, the founder of the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid.

Landgoed Boschoord

The surrounding estate, known as Landgoed Boschoord, remains owned by the original charitable foundation. It has been developed into a 650‑hectare (approximately 1,600 acres) nature area comprising forested land and moorland. The estate is managed for conservation and public recreation within the Drents‑Friese Wold national park.
