Boris Ivanovich Shilkov (Russian: Борис Иванович Шилков; 9 March 1927 – 23 December 2015) was a Soviet speed skater who competed internationally in the 1950s. He is best known for winning the gold medal in the 5,000 m event at the 1956 Winter Olympics in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, and for setting multiple world records in long‑distance speed skating.
Early life and background
Shilkov was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. He began skating at a young age and later joined the Soviet sports society Burevestnik, where he received formal training in speed skating.
Competitive career
- World Championships: Shilkov won the overall title at the 1955 World All‑round Speed Skating Championships held in Moscow. He also earned silver medals in the overall classification at the 1956 and 1957 World Championships.
- Olympic Games: At the 1956 Winter Olympics, Shilkov secured gold in the 5,000 m, placing first with a time of 7:48.6, and earned a silver medal in the 1,500 m, finishing behind his compatriot Yevgeny Grishin. He also placed fourth in the 10,000 m. Shilkov did not compete in later Olympic Games.

- 5,000 m – 8:03.2 (1952)
- 5,000 m – 7:58.1 (1954)
- 10,000 m – 16:11.0 (1955)

Later life and legacy
After retiring from competition, Shilkov worked as a coach and sports official within the Soviet and later Russian speed skating federations. He was honored with several Soviet awards, including the Order of the Badge of Honour and the Medal "For Labour Valour." Shilkov remained an influential figure in Russian speed skating until his death in Saint Petersburg in 2015.
Personal life
Shilkov was married and had two children. His son, Anatoly Shilkov, also pursued a career in speed skating at the national level.
