Boris Minakov

Boris Pavlovich Minakov (Russian: Борис Павлович Минаков; born August 2, 1947) is a prominent Ukrainian scientist and chemist specializing in the theoretical chemistry of polymers and macromolecular compounds. He is an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and is recognized for his significant contributions to understanding the electronic structure and properties of polymeric materials.

Biography and Career Boris Minakov was born on August 2, 1947, in Krasnodar, then part of the Soviet Union. He received his higher education at Dnipropetrovsk State University (now Oles Honchar Dnipro National University), graduating in 1970 with a degree in physics. Following his graduation, Minakov began his scientific career at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kyiv, an institution with which he has remained associated throughout his professional life.

He earned his Doctor of Chemical Sciences degree in 1987 and was awarded the title of Professor in 1993. Over the years, he rose through the ranks, eventually heading the Department of Polymer Theory at the Institute of Macromolecular Chemistry. His dedication and achievements in the field led to his election as an Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in 2009, specifically within the Department of Chemistry.

Research and Contributions Minakov's research primarily focuses on the quantum chemistry of polymers. His work involves developing theoretical models and computational methods to describe the electronic structure, reactivity, and physicochemical properties of various macromolecular compounds. His key contributions include:

  • Theoretical Polymer Chemistry: He has advanced the theoretical understanding of how the molecular structure of polymers dictates their macroscopic properties.
  • Electronic Structure of Polymers: His research provides insights into the electronic characteristics of polymers, which are crucial for predicting their behavior in different environments and applications.
  • Structure-Property Relationships: Minakov has significantly contributed to elucidating the fundamental relationships between the atomic and molecular structure of polymeric materials and their performance characteristics.
  • Polymer Composites: His work often extends to the theoretical prediction and analysis of properties in polymer composites, which are materials engineered for enhanced performance.

Through his extensive publications and research, Minakov has played a vital role in the theoretical underpinnings of polymer science, influencing the design and development of new polymeric materials with tailored properties.

Awards and Recognition For his significant scientific achievements, Boris Minakov was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology in 2006, one of the highest honors for scientists in Ukraine.
