Border (cricket team)

The Border cricket team is one of the fourteen first-class cricket teams in South Africa. Based in East London, Eastern Cape, the team represents the Border region and participates in South Africa's domestic cricket competitions organized by Cricket South Africa (CSA).

History Border was granted first-class status in the 1898–99 season, making their debut in the Currie Cup, South Africa's premier first-class competition. Throughout the 20th century, Border was a consistent participant in the country's domestic structure. While they have not won the main Currie Cup competition, they have maintained a significant presence in South African cricket, serving as a vital pathway for players from the Eastern Cape region. With various restructurings of South African domestic cricket, Border has often functioned as a provincial team contributing players to larger franchise entities (such as the Warriors) while also competing independently in lower-tier or provincial competitions.

Home Ground The primary home ground for the Border cricket team is Buffalo Park Stadium in East London. This venue is a well-established international cricket ground, having hosted One Day Internationals and Twenty20 Internationals for the South African national team.

Competitions Border currently competes in various Cricket South Africa domestic competitions at the provincial level. Following recent reorganizations of the South African cricket structure, they typically participate in:

  • The CSA 4-Day Series (often in Division 2)
  • The CSA One-Day Cup (often in Division 2)
  • The CSA T20 Challenge (in a provincial capacity, which can feed into or run alongside the top-tier franchise T20 competition).

Honours While the major first-class Currie Cup has eluded them, Border has achieved success in other domestic competitions:

  • CSA Provincial One-Day Challenge: Winners (2013–14)
  • CSA Provincial T20 Challenge: Winners (2014–15)
