Bodega Head

Definition Bodega Head is a prominent coastal headland located along the Pacific coast of northern California, United States.

Overview Situated in Sonoma County, Bodega Head extends into the Pacific Ocean and forms part of Bodega Bay, a small inlet that is geologically distinct from the larger San Francisco Bay. The headland lies approximately 45 miles (72 kilometers) north of San Francisco. It is a notable geographic feature within the Bodega Marine Reserve and is managed in part by the University of California, Davis, for research and conservation purposes. The area supports a range of marine and coastal ecosystems and is utilized for scientific study, outdoor recreation, and environmental education.

Etymology/Origin The name "Bodega" originates from Juan Francisco de la Bodega y Quadra, a Spanish naval officer and explorer of the 18th century who surveyed parts of the northern California coast under the service of the Spanish Empire. The headland was subsequently named in association with the broader Bodega Bay region, which bears his name. "Head" is a common geographic term for a point of land extending into a body of water.

Characteristics Bodega Head is composed primarily of granite and is geologically part of an offshore rock formation that was displaced by tectonic activity along the San Andreas Fault system. It is approximately 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long and rises to an elevation of about 430 feet (131 meters) above sea level. The headland features rugged cliffs, grass-covered terraces, and tide pools along its shores. It hosts diverse flora and fauna, including seabirds, marine mammals such as harbor seals, and various intertidal species. The area is also notable for its historical military use, including a former U.S. Air Force radar station from the Cold War era.
