Bob Jackson (rugby league, born 1960)

Robert "Bob" Jackson (born 1960) is an English former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1980s and 1990s. Primarily a forward, he was known for his robust playing style and versatility, often featuring at second-row, prop, or loose forward. Jackson is most notably associated with successful periods at Wigan and Warrington, and he also represented Great Britain internationally.

Playing Career

Jackson began his professional rugby league career with his hometown club, Barrow. His consistent performances as a powerful and skilled forward quickly caught the attention of larger clubs.

In 1986, Jackson joined Wigan, where he became a key component of one of the most dominant teams in the sport's history during the late 1980s and early 1990s. With Wigan, he achieved significant success, including winning multiple Rugby League Championship titles, Challenge Cups, and the Lancashire Cup. He was also part of the Wigan team that triumphed in the 1991 World Club Challenge against the Australian champions Penrith Panthers.

After his successful tenure at Wigan, Jackson moved to Warrington in 1992. He continued to be a prominent figure in the top flight of English rugby league, playing a vital role for the club during their competitive years in the early Super League era. Towards the end of his career, he had stints with other clubs, including Workington Town and Chorley Borough, before retiring from professional play.

International Career

Jackson's strong club form, particularly during his time at Wigan, earned him selection for the Great Britain national team. He made his Test debut in the late 1980s and was a significant member of the touring squads. His international appearances included being part of the Great Britain team that toured Australia for the Ashes series in 1988 and the tour of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea in 1989. He earned several caps for Great Britain, confirming his status as one of the leading forwards of his generation.
