The Bo'ai Special Zone (Chinese: 博愛特區; pinyin: Bó'ài Tèqū) is a restricted security zone in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan, established for the protection of the Presidential Office Building. It is located in the historic center of Taipei and encompasses several government office buildings and historic sites.
Overview
The zone covers the area surrounding the Presidential Office Building within a distance of approximately 200 to 500 meters. It was established jointly by the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of the Interior under the National Security Act to protect the head of state and commander-in-chief. Buildings within this area are subject to a height limit of 24 meters, with additional restrictions on window sizes. The zone is also designated as a prohibited airspace.
History
The area's modern government buildings were constructed by the Japanese administration starting in the 1910s, beginning with the office of the Governor-General of Taiwan, followed by surrounding government structures. This cluster became the administrative center of the Government-General of Taiwan. After the Republic of China relocated to Taiwan in late 1949, the government moved into these buildings, and the President of the Republic took over the Governor-General building as the Presidential Office Building.
