Boštjan Zupančič (born 8 December 1960) is a Slovenian legal scholar and judge. He served as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) representing Slovenia from 2008 to 2017. Prior to his appointment to the ECHR, Zupančič was a professor of constitutional law at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Law, and held various positions within Slovenian judicial and academic institutions.
Early life and education
Zupančič was born in Ljubljana, then part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. He earned his law degree from the University of Ljubljana in 1984 and completed his doctoral studies in law at the same institution, receiving a Ph.D. in 1990. His doctoral dissertation focused on constitutional law and the protection of fundamental rights.
Academic career
After obtaining his doctorate, Zupančič joined the Faculty of Law at the University of Ljubljana as a lecturer. He progressed through the academic ranks to become a full professor of constitutional law. His scholarly work includes publications on constitutional theory, human rights, and the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights. He has contributed to numerous legal journals and has been a frequent speaker at international conferences on constitutional and human‑rights law.
Judicial career
In 2008, Zupančič was elected by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe as the judge in respect of Slovenia at the European Court of Human Rights. During his tenure, he participated in deliberations and judgments on a wide range of cases involving civil and political rights, as well as socio‑economic rights under the European Convention on Human Rights. His term concluded in 2017, after which he returned to academic activities and continued to engage in legal research and teaching.
