Blue lorikeet

Definition
The blue lorikeet (Vini peruviana), also known as the blue‑crowned lorikeet, is a small, arboreal parrot species belonging to the family Psittaculidae. It is native to the Society Islands of French Polynesia.

Overview
The blue lorikeet inhabits subtropical and tropical forested areas, including coastal woodlands and cultivated gardens. It is primarily frugivorous and nectivorous, feeding on the nectar and pollen of native flowering plants as well as on fruits and occasionally insects. The species is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as Near Threatened due to habitat loss and introduced predators, although exact population numbers remain uncertain.

Etymology/Origin
The generic name Vini derives from the Tahitian word “vini,” which historically referred to several lorikeet species in the region. The specific epithet peruviana was originally applied by early European taxonomists who mistakenly associated the bird with Peru; the name has persisted despite the species’ confinement to the Pacific islands.

Characteristics

  • Size: Approximately 20 cm (8 in) in length, with a wingspan of about 30 cm (12 in).
  • Plumage: Predominantly vivid azure to cobalt blue on the head, back, and upper wings, contrasted by a lighter, sometimes whitish throat and breast. The tail feathers are tipped with a darker shade of blue.
  • Bill: A short, curved bill adapted for extracting nectar from tubular flowers.
  • Sexual dimorphism: Minimal; males and females are visually similar, making sex determination in the field difficult.
  • Vocalizations: A series of high‑pitched, thin calls used for flock cohesion and territorial displays.
  • Reproduction: Breeding occurs in the austral spring (September–November). Nests are constructed in natural tree cavities or abandoned woodpecker holes; clutches typically contain 2–3 eggs, which are incubated for roughly 23 days.
