Blagoje Parović

Blagoje Parović (Serbian Cyrillic: Благоје Паровић; 25 March 1903 – 6 July 1937) was a Yugoslav communist revolutionary, a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (CPY), and a political commissar in the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War.

Early life and education
Parović was born in Biograd, near Nevesinje in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire (present‑day Bosnia and Herzegovina). Details of his early education and family background are limited in available sources.

Political activity in Yugoslavia
In the 1920s, Parović became active in the communist movement in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He rose through the ranks of the CPY, eventually being elected to the party’s Central Committee. He was also a member of the Politburo (Politbiro) of the CPY, positioning him among the leading figures of the Yugoslav communist leadership during the interwar period.

Involvement in the Spanish Civil War
Following the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936, Parović volunteered to fight on the side of the Spanish Republic. He served as a political commissar in the XIII International Brigade, responsible for political education, morale, and ideological supervision of the volunteer troops.

Death
Parović was killed in action on 6 July 1937 during the Battle of Brunete, a major Republican offensive near Madrid. Contemporary reports describe his death as occurring while leading his men in combat against Nationalist forces. The circumstances of his death have been the subject of later speculation, but the prevailing historical record identifies the battle as the immediate context of his fatal wounds.

Legacy
After World War II, Parović was commemorated in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia as a martyr of the anti‑fascist struggle. Streets and institutions were named after him, particularly in Serbia and Montenegro. His role as a Yugoslav participant in the International Brigades is noted in histories of both Yugoslav communism and the broader foreign volunteer movement in the Spanish Civil War.
