The blackfin darter (Etheostoma nigripinne) is a species of small freshwater ray-finned fish in the family Percidae. It is a member of the darter subfamily, Etheostomatinae, and is specifically classified within the subgenus Catonotus. The species is native to the southeastern United States.
Taxonomy and Description
The blackfin darter was first described by ichthyologist David Starr Jordan in 1885. It is a small fish, generally reaching an adult length of 50 to 75 millimeters (approximately 2 to 3 inches). The species possesses a relatively robust body and a blunt snout.
The common name "blackfin" refers to the diagnostic coloration of breeding males, which develop intense black pigmentation on their dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins during the spawning season. Outside of the breeding period, or in females and juveniles, the coloration is more subdued, typically consisting of mottled brown or tan patterns that provide camouflage against the gravel and rocky substrates of their environment.
Distribution and Habitat
The geographic range of the blackfin darter is primarily restricted to the Tennessee River drainage system. It is found in parts of Tennessee, northern Alabama, and northeastern Mississippi.
The species inhabits small to medium-sized streams and creeks characterized by clear water and moderate flow. It is most frequently found in "slab-rock" habitats—areas where the stream bed is composed of flat limestone or sandstone rocks and gravel. These rocky areas provide essential cover and serve as primary sites for foraging and reproduction.
Ecology and Behavior
The blackfin darter is a benthic species, meaning it lives and feeds along the bottom of the stream. Its diet consists largely of aquatic invertebrates, including the larvae of midges, mayflies, and caddisflies, as well as small crustaceans such as amphipods.
Reproduction occurs in the spring, typically from March to May. The species utilizes a specialized spawning strategy characteristic of the subgenus Catonotus. Males establish and defend territories beneath flat rocks. A female will enter the nest site and attach her eggs to the underside of the rock, after which the male fertilizes them. The male remains at the site to guard the eggs from predators and to fan them with his fins to ensure adequate oxygenation and to prevent the accumulation of silt until they hatch.
Conservation Status
The blackfin darter is not currently listed as a species of federal conservation concern in the United States. It is considered relatively common and stable within its specialized range. However, like many darter species, it is susceptible to localized threats including habitat fragmentation, water pollution, and increased siltation resulting from land-use changes and agricultural runoff.
