Black Light Burns is an American industrial rock band formed in 2005. It is primarily the brainchild of guitarist and vocalist Wes Borland, best known for his work with Limp Bizkit. The project serves as a creative outlet for Borland, allowing him to explore different musical directions and lyrical themes outside of his other bands.
History and Formation
The genesis of Black Light Burns began during a hiatus from Limp Bizkit in the mid-2000s. Wes Borland had been experimenting with various musical ideas and sought to form a new band that would embody a darker, more experimental, and industrial sound. He recruited an initial lineup that included Danny Lohner (Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle) on bass, Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv) on keyboards, and his Limp Bizkit bandmate John Otto on drums. However, the lineup frequently changed and evolved, with Borland often handling multiple instruments in the studio. The band's name itself evokes a sense of both darkness and intensity, reflecting their musical aesthetic.
Their debut album, Cruel Melody, was released in 2007 to critical acclaim. It featured a diverse sound, incorporating elements of industrial, alternative rock, and electronic music. Borland wrote and performed the majority of the album's material, with contributions from various musicians. Following the album's release, the band embarked on tours, further cementing their live presence.
Subsequent releases included Cover Your Heart and the Anvil Wearing a Crown (2008), which was a B-sides and covers album, The Moment You Realize You're Going to Fall (2012), and Lotus Island (2013). Throughout their career, Black Light Burns has maintained a fluid lineup, often featuring Borland as the central and consistent figure, supported by a rotating cast of musicians both in the studio and for live performances.
Musical Style
Black Light Burns' musical style is predominantly categorized as industrial rock and alternative rock. Their sound is characterized by:
- Heavy guitar riffs: Often distorted and layered, contributing to a dense sonic landscape.
- Electronic elements: Synthesizers, drum machines, and samples are frequently used to create atmospheric textures and rhythmic complexity.
- Dark and introspective lyrics: Themes often delve into psychological introspection, social commentary, and personal struggles.
- Borland's distinctive vocals: His vocal style ranges from melodic singing to more aggressive, whispered, or shouted passages.
- Dynamic song structures: Songs often feature shifts in intensity, tempo, and instrumentation.
The band's sound has drawn comparisons to other industrial and alternative acts, but Borland's unique guitar playing and songwriting ensure a distinct identity.
