Bjarne Bø (3 April 1907 – 9 August 1998) was a Norwegian actor notable for his extensive career on stage, in film, and as a narrator of folk tales.
Early life and education
Born in Skjeberg, in the municipality of Sarpsborg, Østfold county, Norway, Bø began his theatrical involvement in the late 1920s.
Stage career
Bø made his stage debut in 1929, playing the role of Sjur in Ove Ansteinsson’s play Hu Dagmar at the Bjørnevik Theater. From 1935 to 1939 he performed at the National Theater, primarily in minor roles. In 1951 he joined the newly established Folketeatret (People’s Theater), which merged with Oslo Nye Teater (Oslo New Theater) in 1959; he remained with Oslo Nye Teater for the rest of his professional life.
A significant portion of his work was devoted to children’s theatre, where he wrote, taught, and performed in over 1,000 productions. He was also a recognized poetry reciter and frequently served as a reader for the Norwegian public broadcaster NRK (radio and television). His narration of the folk tale Reve-enka (“The Fox’s Widow”) is especially remembered.
Film and television
Bø’s film debut was as a strikebreaker in Det drønner gjennom dalen (1938). Over his career he appeared in more than 20 Norwegian films, including Ungen (1938), Gryr i Norden (1939), Trysil‑Knut (1942), Savnet siden mandag (1955), and The Chasers (1959). He also performed on television, notably in the comedy series Fleksnes fataliteter (The Fleksnes Fatalities), portraying the character Uncle Knut.
Awards and honors
In recognition of his contributions to Norwegian theatre, Bø was awarded the King’s Medal of Merit in gold.

Bjarne Bø died on 9 August 1998 in Oslo, Norway.
