Björn Gelotte

Björn Gelotte (born August 27, 1975) is a Swedish musician, best known as the lead guitarist for the melodic death metal band In Flames. He joined the band in 1995 as a drummer but switched to guitar in 1998, a position he has held ever since.

Career:

  • Early Years and In Flames (Drummer): Gelotte began his career as a drummer. He joined In Flames in 1995, replacing their previous drummer, Johan Larsson. His drumming can be heard on the band's second studio album, The Jester Race (1996), and their third album, Whoracle (1997).
  • Transition to Guitar: In 1998, after Glenn Ljungström left In Flames, Gelotte transitioned from drums to lead guitar. This move proved to be a pivotal moment for both Gelotte and the band, as his guitar playing became a defining element of In Flames' sound. His first album as a guitarist was Colony (1999).
  • Guitarist for In Flames: As lead guitarist, Gelotte has been a primary songwriter and musical force behind In Flames' evolution from their melodic death metal roots to a more modern metal sound. He is known for his distinctive riffing, melodic solos, and his collaborative songwriting with vocalist Anders Fridén. He has contributed to every In Flames album since The Jester Race, including critically acclaimed works like Clayman, Reroute to Remain, Come Clarity, and A Sense of Purpose.
  • Other Projects: Beyond In Flames, Gelotte has been involved in other musical endeavors. He was a member of the short-lived supergroup All Ends (2003-2007) and later joined the doom metal band Grand Cadaver in 2020.

Musical Style and Influence:

Gelotte's guitar style combines heavy, often syncopated riffs with intricate melodic lines and solos. He is often cited as an influence in the melodic death metal genre and beyond, contributing significantly to the signature "Gothenburg sound" developed by In Flames and other bands from the region. His playing emphasizes atmosphere and memorable melodies while maintaining a powerful, aggressive foundation.
