General description
Bionia is a small genus of flowering plants belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae). Species within the genus are typically shrubs or subshrubs characterized by bipinnate or compound leaves, and papilionaceous (butterfly‑shaped) flowers typical of many members of the subfamily Faboideae. The flowers are usually bilaterally symmetrical and may display colors ranging from white to pink or purple, depending on the species.
Distribution and habitat
The genus is endemic to South America, with most documented occurrences in Brazil. Species are found in a variety of habitats, including seasonally dry tropical forests, cerrado (savanna‑like) ecosystems, and rocky outcrops.
