Bilohiria Raion

Bilohiria Raion (Ukrainian: Білогірський район) was a raion (district) in Khmelnytskyi Oblast in western Ukraine. The administrative center of the raion was the urban-type settlement of Bilohiria. The raion had an area of 776 square kilometres (299.6 sq mi). The last estimated population of the raion was 26,177 (2020 estimate).

Overview Bilohiria Raion was located in the northern part of Khmelnytskyi Oblast, bordering Rivne Oblast to the north. Its landscape is characterized by the Volhynian-Podolian Upland, with agricultural lands making up a significant portion of its territory. The Horyn River, a right tributary of the Pripyat River, flows through the district.

History The raion was established in 1923 as Lyakhivtsi Raion. In 1946, it was renamed Bilohiria Raion when the settlement of Lyakhivtsi was renamed Bilohiria. Throughout its history, the raion primarily functioned as an agricultural area within the Khmelnytskyi Oblast.

Administrative Reform of 2020 As part of Ukraine's large-scale administrative reform, Bilohiria Raion was abolished in July 2020. The reform aimed to consolidate smaller administrative units into larger, more efficient ones. The territory of Bilohiria Raion was subsequently merged into the enlarged Shepetivka Raion.

Demographics and Economy Prior to its abolition, Bilohiria Raion had a predominantly rural population. The economy was largely agrarian, focusing on crop cultivation (such as wheat, sugar beet, and potatoes) and livestock farming. Small-scale industrial enterprises, primarily related to agricultural processing, were also present.

Notable Features While not a major tourist destination, the raion contained several small villages and rural communities typical of western Ukraine. Its natural environment, particularly along the Horyn River, offered scenic views.
