Billy Bowen

William Harrison "Billy" Bowen (January 17, 1924 – February 1, 2019) was an American professional baseball player. A right-handed outfielder, he played for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1954 and the Kansas City Athletics in 1955 during his brief Major League Baseball (MLB) career. Bowen was primarily known for his minor league career, which spanned over a decade.

Early Life

William Harrison Bowen was born on January 17, 1924, in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. Details about his early life and amateur baseball career are limited, but he served in the United States military during World War II before beginning his professional baseball career.

Playing Career

Bowen began his professional baseball career in 1946, signing with the Philadelphia Athletics organization. He spent many years honing his skills in the minor leagues, steadily progressing through various levels. Known for his speed and defensive capabilities in the outfield, he became a consistent performer in the Athletics' farm system.

In 1954, at the age of 30, Bowen made his MLB debut with the Philadelphia Athletics. He appeared in 61 games for the team during their final season in Philadelphia before relocating to Kansas City. In his rookie year, he batted .218 with 1 home run and 12 runs batted in (RBI).

He continued with the team as they transitioned to the Kansas City Athletics for the 1955 season. That year, he played in 21 games, batting .214 with 2 RBIs before being sent back to the minor leagues. His MLB career concluded after the 1955 season, having played a total of 82 major league games with a career batting average of .217.

Bowen continued to play in the minor leagues until 1957, spending time with teams like the Syracuse Chiefs and the Columbus Jets. Over his 12-season minor league career, he played in over 1,400 games.

Later Life and Death

After retiring from professional baseball, Billy Bowen lived a private life. He passed away on February 1, 2019, at the age of 95.
