William Zuckert (December 18, 1915 – January 23, 1997) was an American character actor whose career spanned more than five decades across radio, television, film, and stage. He is remembered for frequent portrayals of authority figures such as police officers, judges, and military personnel.
Early life and education
Zuckert was born in the Bronx, New York. After completing his schooling, he worked for six years in the Office of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C., where he became involved with local little‑theatre groups. During this period he also performed unpaid voice work for radio programs supporting the March of Dimes, the Red Cross, and the U.S. Navy.
Military service
During World War II Zuckert served in New Guinea as a member of the Seabees, the U.S. Naval Construction Battalions.
Radio career
Beginning in 1941, Zuckert built a prolific career in radio, lending his voice to hundreds of dramas over two decades. Notably, on old‑time radio he portrayed Lieutenant Louis Parker in the NBC crime series Crime and Peter Chambers.
Television and film
Transitioning to television in the 1950s, Zuckert became a familiar guest and character actor. Highlights include:
- Sheriff Johnny Behan in the Star Trek episode “Spectre of the Gun” (1968).
- Appearances on westerns such as Gunsmoke (multiple episodes, 1962‑1965).
- Roles in films ranging from classic westerns (Hang ‘em High, 1968) to comedies (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, 1994) and cult horror (Critters 3, 1991).
His Broadway credits include The Gang’s All Here (1959) and Sixth Finger in a Five Finger Glove (1956). Zuckert also served on the boards of the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists.
Personal life
Zuckert married actress Gladys Holland; the marriage lasted 30 years until his death. He had three children—a daughter with Holland and two children from a prior marriage.
Death
Bill Zuckert died of pneumonia, a complication of cancer, on January 23, 1997, at the Motion Picture & Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California, aged 81.
