Bill Sinkin (1913 – 2014) was an American civic leader, entrepreneur, and sustainability advocate best known for founding the Sustainable Communities Initiative (SCI) in Austin, Texas. Through SCI, Sinkin promoted community‑based approaches to environmental, social, and economic sustainability, emphasizing local action, education, and partnership among government, business, and nonprofit sectors.
He authored the handbook Achieving Sustainability: Winning Strategies for Communities (1999), which outlined practical steps for municipalities and organizations to implement sustainable practices. Sinkin’s work influenced regional planning efforts in Central Texas and contributed to broader discussions on sustainable development in the United States.
In addition to his advocacy, Sinkin was involved in various local boards and advisory committees, supporting initiatives related to environmental policy, renewable energy, and urban planning.
