Bikram Singh (lieutenant general)

Bikram Singh (born 1952) is a retired Indian Army General who served as the 25th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army. He assumed office on May 31, 2012, and retired on July 31, 2014. Prior to his appointment as COAS, he served as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) of the Eastern Command.

Singh was commissioned into the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment in 1972. He has held various command and staff appointments throughout his career, including commanding a battalion during Operation Parakram, a brigade in counter-insurgency operations, and a division. He has also served in United Nations peacekeeping missions in Nicaragua and El Salvador.

His tenure as COAS was marked by a focus on modernisation and training of the Indian Army. He has been awarded several decorations, including the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM), the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM), and the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) for his distinguished service. He is a graduate of the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, and the United States Army War College, Carlisle.
