Big Sound Authority

Big Sound Authority was a British soul-pop band active primarily in the mid-1980s. Formed in London, the group was known for its polished, sophisticated sound that blended elements of soul, funk, and synth-pop, characteristic of the era. They achieved their greatest commercial success with the single "This House (Is Where Love Dies)".

History

Big Sound Authority was formed in 1983, emerging from the vibrant London music scene. Key members included Mark "Clem" Cleminson (vocals) and Tony "Funky" Henderson (guitar and production), with a rotating lineup of musicians providing instrumentation and backing vocals. The band signed with MCA Records and released their debut album, An Inward Revolution, in 1985.

Their breakthrough came with the single "This House (Is Where Love Dies)", which reached number 21 on the UK Singles Chart in 1985. The song, featuring prominent female vocals, became their signature track and garnered significant airplay. Following this success, the band released several other singles, including "Stopping to Steal" and "Oh, I See," but none matched the chart performance of their debut hit.

Despite critical acclaim for their musicality and production, An Inward Revolution and subsequent singles did not achieve sustained commercial success. The band continued to perform and record for a few more years but eventually disbanded towards the end of the 1980s.

Musical Style

Big Sound Authority's sound was heavily influenced by soul and funk music, fused with the contemporary synth-pop and new wave trends of the 1980s. Their arrangements often featured prominent brass sections, grooving basslines, and layered synthesizers, creating a lush and sophisticated atmosphere. The lead vocals, often delivered by female singers, added a soulful dimension, drawing comparisons to artists like The Style Council, Sade, and early Simply Red. Their production was typically smooth and highly polished, reflecting the high standards of mid-1980s pop.
