Bickley railway station

Bickley railway station is a National Rail commuter station situated in the residential suburb of Bickley, within the London Borough of Bromley, England. It is located on the South Eastern Main Line, 12 mi (19 km) southeast of London Charing Cross, and is managed by Southeastern.

Location and access
The station lies on Bickley Road (A224) near the junction with St. John's Road. It has two platforms serving up and down lines. Access to the platforms is provided via a footbridge and step‑free routes from the ticket office and car park.

History
The station was opened on 5 January 1858 by the South Eastern Railway (SER) as part of the line extension from Lewisham to Sevenoaks. It originally featured simple timber buildings, which were replaced in the early 20th century with more substantial brick structures. The station survived the major railway reorganisations of the 1920s and 1940s, becoming part of the Southern Railway in 1923 and later British Railways Southern Region after nationalisation in 1948. In the 1990s, responsibility for passenger services transferred to the franchise holder now known as Southeastern.

Facilities
The station is staffed during peak hours and provides a ticket office, ticket vending machines, waiting shelters, and real‑time information displays. Ticket barriers are installed on both entrances. Bicycle storage is available, and a small car park offers limited spaces for commuters. The platforms are equipped with tactile paving and step‑free access via ramps.

Services
As of the May 2024 timetable, Bickley railway station is served by:

  • Off‑peak: 2 trains per hour (tph) to London Charing Cross via Lewisham and 2 tph to London Cannon Street via Lewisham; 2 tph to Sevenoaks; 2 tph to Orpington (some continuing to Gillingham).
  • Peak: Additional services to London Victoria and Thameslink routes operate during morning and evening peaks, providing commuter capacity.

All services are operated using electric multiple units (EMUs), predominantly Class 376 and Class 465/466 Networker units.

Local bus routes serving the station include London Buses routes 162, 246, and 353, linking Bickley with surrounding districts such as Beckenham, Bromley, and Pett’s Hill. The station forms part of the London Travelcard zone 4.

Future developments
Planning documents from the London Borough of Bromley indicate proposals for modest upgrades, including improved step‑free access and increased car‑park capacity, though specific timelines have not been confirmed.
