Bhangura Upazila

Bhangura Upazila is an administrative sub‑district (upazila) of Pabna District in the Rajshahi Division of north‑western Bangladesh. The upazila’s headquarters are located in the town of Bhangura.

History
The area was originally organized as a thana (police precinct) during the British colonial period; official records indicate its establishment in 1909. In accordance with the national local‑government reforms of the early 1980s, Bhangura Thana was upgraded to an upazila (sub‑district) on 15 November 1983.

Geography
Bhangura Upazila covers an area of approximately 166.84 km² (64.4 sq mi). It is bounded by Ishwardi Upazila to the north, Chatmohar Upazila to the east, Pabna Sadar Upazila to the south, and the Padma (Ganges) River to the west, which forms part of the region’s natural boundary. The terrain is predominantly flat, consisting of alluvial floodplains suitable for agriculture.

Administrative divisions
The upazila is divided into a municipality (Bhangura Municipality) and six union parishads: Bhangura, Bhotbari, Daulatpur, Kabirhat, Kothapara, and Manikganj. These union parishads are further subdivided into 94 mauzas and 127 villages.

Demographics
According to the 2011 Census of Bangladesh conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, Bhangura Upazila had a total population of 150,514, with a roughly equal gender distribution (51 % male, 49 % female). The population density was about 902 inhabitants per km². The literacy rate was reported at 54.9 % for individuals aged 7 years and above, which is slightly above the national average at that time. The majority of residents are Muslim, with a minority Hindu community.

Economy
Agriculture is the principal economic activity, accounting for the majority of employment. Key crops include rice, jute, wheat, and various vegetables. The proximity to the Padma River facilitates inland fishing, and a modest portion of the population is engaged in freshwater fishing and related trade. Small‑scale industries, such as rice milling, weaving, and handicrafts, are present in the municipal area.

Education
Bhangura Upazila hosts a network of primary and secondary schools, as well as several higher‑secondary institutions. Notable among them are Bhangura Government College, established in 1966, and Bhangura Model High School. The upazila also contains a number of madrasa institutions that provide religious education.

Transport and infrastructure
Road transport is the main mode of connectivity; the upazila is linked to the district centre, Pabna, by a paved highway and to neighboring upazilas via regional roads. River transport along the Padma is used for the movement of bulk goods and passengers, especially during the monsoon season when water levels rise. Utilities such as electricity and telecommunications have been expanded throughout the upazila in recent decades, though rural electrification remains incomplete in some peripheral villages.

Health services
Public health facilities include the Bhangura Upazila Health Complex, which offers primary medical care, maternal and child health services, and basic emergency treatment. Several private clinics and pharmacies supplement the public health infrastructure.
