Beutenbergia cavernae

Beutenbergia cavernae is a Gram-positive, non-spore-forming, non-motile species of bacteria belonging to the family Beutenbergiaceae within the actinobacterial suborder Micrococcineae. It is the type species of the genus Beutenbergia.

Discovery and Isolation

The species was first described in 1999 by Ingrid Groth and colleagues in the International Journal of Systematic Bacteriology. The bacterium was isolated from soil samples collected in the Reed Flute Cave (Ludi Yan) in Guilin, Guangxi, China. The genus name Beutenbergia honors the Beutenberg campus in Jena, Germany, where the research was conducted, while the species epithet cavernae (Latin for "of a cave") refers to the cave habitat from which it was isolated.

Phylogenetic Significance

Beutenbergia cavernae is of phylogenetic interest due to its isolated position within the actinobacterial suborder Micrococcineae. Its complete genome sequence has been published and is available (DSM 12333, GenBank accession CP001618).
