Bertrand Goldschmidt

Bertrand Goldschmidt (1903 – 1994) was a French chemist and nuclear physicist who played a pivotal role in the development of France’s atomic energy program. He is noted for his contributions to the extraction and purification of plutonium during the Manhattan Project and for his subsequent leadership in establishing France’s independent nuclear weapons capability.

Early life and education
Goldschmidt was born on 31 March 1903 in Paris, France. He studied chemistry at the École Normale Supérieure, where he earned his agrégation in physical chemistry. He completed his doctoral research under the supervision of Paul Scherrer, focusing on radiochemistry and the behavior of radioactive isotopes.

Manhattan Project involvement
In 1945, Goldschmidt was recruited to join the Manhattan Project’s Metallurgical Laboratory at the University of Chicago. Working alongside notable scientists such as Glenn Seaborg and Edwin McMillan, he contributed to the development of the bismuth phosphate process for the separation of plutonium from irradiated uranium fuel. His expertise in radiochemical separations was instrumental in the production of the plutonium used in the Trinity test and the “Fat Man” bomb dropped on Nagasaki.

Post‑war activities and French nuclear program
After World War II, Goldschmidt returned to France, where he was appointed head of the newly created Commissariat à l’énergie atomique (CEA). He oversaw the construction of France’s first nuclear reactors, including the G1 heavy‑water reactor at the Marcoule site, which achieved the first French production of plutonium in 1952. Goldschmidt also served as the first director of the CEA’s nuclear weapons development division, guiding the research that led to France’s first atomic bomb test, “Gerboise Bleue,” in 1960.

Later career and legacy
Goldschmidt remained an influential figure in French scientific policy throughout the 1950s and 1960s, advocating for the peaceful applications of nuclear energy alongside defense capabilities. He retired from active service in the early 1970s but continued to advise on scientific matters until his death on 13 May 1994.
