Beograd (band)

Beograd was a prominent Yugoslav new wave and electronic music band formed in Belgrade, Socialist Republic of Serbia, in the early 1980s. They are widely recognized as pioneers of electronic music in the former Yugoslavia and were an integral part of the influential "New Wave" scene that emerged during that period.

History The band Beograd was founded in 1981 by Dejan Stanisavljević (keyboards, vocals), Slobodan Stanić (bass), Milan Bubalo (drums), and Miloš Obrenović (guitar). Their sound was heavily influenced by contemporary British synth-pop and new wave acts, distinguishing them from many rock-oriented bands of the time. They quickly gained attention for their innovative use of synthesizers and drum machines, which were relatively new concepts in Yugoslav popular music.

After releasing a couple of singles, the band released their sole studio album, Slike iz života (Pictures from Life), in 1983 through PGP-RTB. The album featured a minimalist electronic sound, characterized by melodic synth lines and Stanisavljević's distinctive vocals. Despite critical acclaim and a significant impact on the developing electronic scene, the band disbanded shortly after the album's release, with members pursuing other projects or leaving the music industry.

Musical Style Beograd's musical style was primarily electronic new wave, with a strong emphasis on synthesizers and programmed drums. They often employed a minimalist aesthetic, creating atmospheric and sometimes melancholic soundscapes. Their lyrics, primarily in Serbian, explored themes common to the new wave movement, including urban alienation and introspection. Their sound was distinct within the Yugoslav music scene, making them one of the earliest examples of pure electronic pop music in the region.
