Benton is a town located in the northwestern corner of Yates County in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 United States Census, the town had a population of approximately 800 residents. The town lies on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, one of the Finger Lakes, and is characterized by a mixture of agricultural land, residential areas, and small commercial establishments.

History

Benton was first settled in the early 19th century, with the first permanent European‑American settlers arriving around 1808. The town was officially organized in 1900 from portions of the neighboring towns of Milo and Penn Yan. It is named after a local landowner, although the precise origin of the name has not been definitively documented.

Geography

The town covers a total area of roughly 45 square miles (117 km²), of which about 40 square miles (104 km²) is land and 5 square miles (13 km²) is water, primarily the adjacent portion of Seneca Lake. The western boundary of Benton abuts the lake, providing shoreline that supports wineries and tourism. The terrain is generally rolling, with elevations ranging from lake level to approximately 1,200 feet (366 m) above sea level. Major routes include New York State Route 14, which runs north–south through the town, and County Road 38.

According to the 2020 Census, Benton’s population is predominately non‑Hispanic White, with smaller representations of African American, Asian, and Hispanic residents. Household composition reflects a mix of family units and individuals, with an average household size of 2.5 persons. The local economy is anchored by agriculture, notably viticulture; several wineries and vineyards operate within the town, benefiting from the Finger Lakes AVA (American Viticultural Area).
