Benoni United F.C.

History

Benoni United F.C. gained promotion to the National First Division, participating in the league during the mid-2000s. Their most significant period was the 2005-2006 season, which ultimately led to their downfall.

During this season, the club became embroiled in a major scandal involving player registration irregularities and allegations of match-fixing. The controversy centred around claims that Benoni United had registered players using incorrect or falsified documentation, and there were accusations of bribery related to the manipulation of match outcomes.

Following an investigation by the South African Football Association (SAFA), the club was found guilty of several infringements. As a result of these findings, Benoni United F.C. faced severe penalties, including points deductions. This ultimately led to their relegation from the National First Division at the end of the 2005-2006 season.

Disbandment

After their relegation and the significant financial and reputational damage from the scandal, Benoni United F.C. effectively ceased to exist as an independent professional entity. The club's franchise rights were subsequently sold or became defunct, marking the end of its short and troubled history in South African football. The club is often remembered more for its off-field controversies than for its on-field achievements.

It is important to distinguish Benoni United F.C. from other clubs that have operated in the Benoni area, such as Benoni Premier United (later Thanda Royal Zulu F.C.), which was a separate entity.
