Bennett Sims (author)

Bennett Sims (born 1984) is an American author recognized for his works of literary fiction, often incorporating elements of horror, philosophy, and the uncanny. His writing frequently explores themes of perception, reality, memory, and the unsettling aspects of the everyday.

Sims gained prominence with his debut collection of short stories, White Dialogues, published in 2017. This collection was widely praised for its unique blend of intellectual rigor and unsettling atmosphere, drawing comparisons to authors like Edgar Allan Poe and Franz Kafka for its psychological depth and exploration of existential dread. His stories in White Dialogues often feature characters grappling with inexplicable phenomena, decaying realities, and the breakdown of logical understanding.

His first novel, A Questionable Shape, published in 2013, is a zombie narrative that redefines the genre by focusing on the philosophical and psychological implications of a post-apocalyptic world rather than conventional action. The novel employs an unconventional structure, utilizing an index and diary entries to construct its narrative, further cementing Sims' reputation for experimental and intellectually challenging fiction.

Sims' work is often categorized within the burgeoning subgenre of "literary horror" or "weird fiction," where traditional genre tropes are subverted or elevated to explore deeper philosophical and psychological concerns. He holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop and has had his stories published in various literary journals and anthologies.
