Ben Sidran (born August 14, 1943) is an American jazz and rock pianist, vocalist, composer, author, and record producer. He is recognized for his contributions to the development of jazz-rock fusion and for his work as a television host and music historian.
Early Life and Education
Ben Sidran was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and raised in a musically inclined family. He studied psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he also began performing in local clubs. While at UCLA, he formed connections with prominent musicians in the burgeoning West Coast jazz scene.
Music Career
- 1970s: Sidran gained prominence as a member of the avant‑garde rock group The Steve Miller Band, appearing on the albums Children of the Future (1968) and Sailor (1969). He also released his debut solo album, Don't Let the Dreamers Sleep (1972), which blended jazz improvisation with rock sensibilities.
- 1970s–1980s: He continued to produce a series of solo recordings, including On the Cool Side (1975) and The Cat and the Hat (1978), which featured collaborations with notable jazz artists such as Phil Upchurch and Randy Brecker.
