Ben Shepherd (born September 20 1968) is an American musician best known as the bassist for the rock band Sound Garden, which he joined in 1990. His tenure with the group spanned the band's most commercially successful period, contributing to three multi-platinum studio albums before the group’s initial dissolution in 1997, and later participating in their 2010 reunion and subsequent releases.
Early Life and Education
Ben Shepherd was born in Okinawa, Japan, to a military family and grew up in various locations before settling in Seattle, Washington. He began playing guitar and bass at an early age, receiving formal instruction and participating in local band projects throughout his adolescence.
Career
Early Projects
Prior to joining Sound Garden, Shepherd performed with several Seattle-area acts, including the grunge‑influenced band Mudhoney (as a temporary replacement) and Malfunkshun. He also contributed to the local independent label Sub Pop’s compilation recordings.
Sound Garden (1990–1997, 2010–present)
Shepherd replaced original bassist Hiro Yamamoto in 1990, debuting on the band's EP "Loudest Love" and the subsequent full‑length album "Badmotorfinger" (1991). He played on the following seminal releases:
- "Superunknown" (1994) – featured the hit singles “Black Hole Sun” and “Spoonman”.
- "Down on the Upside" (1996) – marked the band's final studio album before their 1997 hiatus.
During his initial tenure, Shepherd contributed bass lines, co‑wrote several songs (e.g., “4th of July”, “The Day I Tried to Live”), and occasionally played guitar and other instruments on studio recordings. After Sound Garden disbanded in 1997, Shepherd pursued solo and collaborative projects, including the formation of the band The Spys and participation in the side‑project Hater, which released a self‑titled album in 1993.
Following Sound Garden’s reformation in 2010, Shepherd returned as bassist and continued touring and recording with the group, notably on the 2012 EP "King Animal" and the 2012 full‑length album of the same name, which achieved a Billboard Top 10 placement.
Other Musical Endeavors
Shepherd has contributed bass and songwriting to various other artists’ recordings, including collaborations with Mark Lanegan, Davis, and Mike McCready (Pearl Jam). He occasionally performs as a solo acoustic act, showcasing original compositions distinct from his work with Sound Garden.
Musical Style and Equipment
Shepherd’s bass playing is characterized by melodic phrasing, use of distortion and effects, and a tendency toward alternative‑rock and grunge tonalities. He frequently employs Fender Precision and Jazz basses, with amplifiers such as Ampeg SVT for live performances. Shepherd is also known for utilizing alternate tunings and incorporating slide guitar techniques in select recordings.
Personal Life
Shepherd is married to actress Katherine Moennig (as of publicly reported information up to 2023). He maintains a low public profile, focusing primarily on musical pursuits and occasional charitable activities, including benefit concerts for Seattle-area music education programs.
Legacy and Influence
Ben Shepherd is regarded as an integral component of Sound Garden’s sound during their peak commercial era. Music critics have highlighted his basslines as contributing to the band’s distinctive blend of heavy riffing and melodic sensibility. His work has influenced a generation of grunge and alternative‑rock bassists.
