Bematistes epaea, commonly known as the common bematistes, is a species of butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae. It is native to the tropical and subtropical regions of Sub-Saharan Africa. While historically classified within the genus Bematistes, some contemporary taxonomic treatments place it within the genus Acraea (as Acraea epaea), reflecting ongoing revisions in the classification of the tribe Acraeini.

Taxonomy and Classification

The species was first described by Pieter Cramer in 1779. It is part of the subfamily Heliconiinae. Due to the morphological similarities and genetic relationships within the tribe Acraeini, the genus Bematistes is frequently considered a subgenus or a synonym of Acraea. Several subspecies have been identified based on geographical distribution and variations in wing patterns, including B. e. epaea, B. e. paragea, and B. e. melina.

Physical Description

Bematistes epaea is characterized by its relatively large wingspan and distinct wing markings. The dorsal surface of the wings typically features a dark brown or blackish ground color, overlaid with prominent bands or patches that range from pale yellow to creamy white or orange-buff, depending on the subspecies and sex. Like many members of the Acraeini tribe, the species often exhibits a degree of aposematism, signaling its distastefulness to predators through its coloration. It is also noted for being part of mimetic rings, where it shares similar color patterns with other butterfly species to provide mutual protection from predation.

Distribution and Habitat

The species is widely distributed across West, Central, and East Africa. Its range extends from Senegal and Guinea through the Congo Basin to Uganda, western Kenya, and Ethiopia, reaching as far south as Angola and Zambia. Bematistes epaea typically inhabits primary and secondary lowland forests, as well as heavy woodland areas where its larval host plants are present.

Biology and Ecology

The larvae of Bematistes epaea are known to feed on plants within the family Passifloraceae, specifically species in the genus Adenia. Like other Acraeines, the larvae sequester toxic compounds from their host plants, which are retained through metamorphosis into the adult stage, rendering the butterflies unpalatable to many avian and insectivorous predators. The adults are generally slow-flying and are frequently observed in the forest understory or visiting flowers for nectar.
