Belprahon is a municipality in the administrative district of Jura Bernois in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.
Geography Belprahon is situated in the Jura Mountains, specifically in the French-speaking part of the canton of Bern, known as the Bernese Jura. The municipality covers an area of approximately 3.79 square kilometers (1.46 sq mi). The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, forests, and agricultural land typical of the Jura region. It borders the municipalities of Moutier, Roches (BE), Crémines, and Grandval.
History The earliest historical mention of Belprahon dates back to 1373, where it was recorded as Berpraon. The name is believed to originate from the Latin Bellus Pratum, meaning "beautiful meadow". Historically, Belprahon was part of the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. Following the French Revolution, it became part of France between 1797 and 1815, specifically within the département of Mont-Terrible, and later Haut-Rhin. In 1815, after the Congress of Vienna, Belprahon, along with much of the former Prince-Bishopric, was assigned to the Canton of Bern as part of Switzerland.
Demographics As of recent census data, Belprahon is a small municipality with a modest population. The majority of its inhabitants are French-speaking. The population density is relatively low, reflecting its rural character.
Economy The local economy traditionally relies on agriculture, including dairy farming and forestry. Some residents commute to larger nearby towns like Moutier for work. Tourism is not a primary economic driver, but the natural beauty of the Jura region attracts visitors interested in hiking and outdoor activities.
Politics and Administration Belprahon is governed by a municipal council (conseil communal) and a mayor (maire), typical of Swiss municipal administration. It falls under the judicial and administrative jurisdiction of the Jura Bernois district.
