Definition
Belouizdad is a residential district (sometimes referred to as a neighbourhood or former commune) within the capital city of Algiers, Algeria.
Overview
Located in the central part of Algiers, Belouizdad lies west of the historic Casbah and east of the municipality of El Madania. The area is characterized by a mix of mid‑20th‑century apartment blocks, commercial streets, and public spaces. It is served by the Algiers Metro (Line 1) with a station named “Belouizdad,” as well as by several bus routes, making it well connected to the broader urban network. The district is known for its cultural vibrancy and hosts a number of cafés, markets, and community facilities.
Etymology/Origin
The district was formerly known as “Belcourt” during the French colonial period, named after a French military officer. Following Algerian independence in 1962, the area was renamed “Belouizdad” in honor of Mohamed Belouizdad (1924–1952), a prominent Algerian nationalist and member of the nationalist organization MTLD who was executed by the French authorities.
