Belcarra Regional Park is a public park situated in the lower mainland of British Columbia, Canada. The park is administered by Metro Vancouver Regional District (formerly Greater Vancouver Regional District) as part of its regional park system.
Location and Geography
The park lies on the north shore of Burrard Inlet, adjacent to the community of Belcarra and the Indian River. It encompasses a mixture of forested land, shoreline, and wetland habitats. The park’s area is approximately 360 hectares (about 890 acres), extending from the shoreline of Burrard Inlet eastward into the surrounding hills.
History
The land that now forms Belcarra Regional Park was acquired by the regional district in the 1970s as part of a broader initiative to protect natural areas and provide recreational opportunities for residents of the Greater Vancouver region. The name “Belcarra” derives from the Irish town of Belcarra in County Galway, reflecting the heritage of early European settlers in the area.
Facilities and Recreation
Belcarra Regional Park offers a network of multi‑use trails suitable for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Key trail segments include:
- Belcarra Creek Trail – follows the creek through forested sections and provides access to a beach area.
- Indian River Trail – skirts the river’s edge and connects to adjacent regional parks.
- Burrard Inlet Lakeside – a shoreline beach used for swimming, kayaking, and picnicking.
The park also contains designated picnic areas, pit toilets, and limited parking facilities at the main trailhead located near the intersection of Belcarra Road and the Indian River Road. Seasonal marine traffic on Burrard Inlet makes the park a popular site for viewing passing vessels.
Ecology
The park’s ecosystems include second‑growth coastal western hemlock forests, riparian zones along the Indian River, and intertidal habitats along the inlet. Faunal species observed within the park include black-tailed deer, various bird species such as Pacific wrens and bald eagles, and occasional sightings of harbour seals near the shoreline.
Access
Public access to Belcarra Regional Park is via Belcarra Road, which connects to the broader road network of the Lower Mainland. The park is open year‑round from dawn to dusk; however, some trail sections may be closed temporarily due to maintenance, weather conditions, or ecological protection measures.
Management
Metro Vancouver Regional District is responsible for the park’s maintenance, ecological monitoring, and development of recreational infrastructure. Management objectives focus on preserving natural habitats, providing low‑impact recreational opportunities, and coordinating with Indigenous groups whose traditional territories include the area.
