Bathyspinulidae is a taxonomic family of marine bivalve mollusks within the order Nuculanida. The family was formally established by malacologists Eugene V. Coan and Paul Valentich-Scott in 2012.
Members of Bathyspinulidae are part of the subclass Protobranchia, a group of bivalves characterized by relatively primitive gill structures primarily used for respiration rather than filter feeding. Instead, these organisms typically use long labial palps to collect organic detritus from the seafloor.
The family is primarily composed of deep-sea species found in bathyal and abyssal zones. Morphologically, they possess taxodont hinges, which consist of a series of small, interlocking teeth along the hinge line of the shell. The genus Bathyspinula serves as the type genus for the family.
Current scientific understanding of Bathyspinulidae is based largely on taxonomic surveys and deep-sea biological research.
