Bathynellidae is a family of minute, blind, and unpigmented crustaceans belonging to the order Bathynellacea. Members of this family are commonly referred to as bathynellids and are adapted to life in subterranean aquatic habitats such as groundwater, interstitial spaces in aquifers, and the hyporheic zones of streams.

Morphology Bathynellids are typically 1–3 mm in length. Their bodies are elongated and segmented, possessing a reduced number of appendages compared to more familiar crustaceans. They lack functional eyes and pigmentation, reflecting their adaptation to aphotic environments. The thorax bears six pairs of walking legs, while the abdomen ends in a telson and a pair of uropods.
Ecology and distribution Bathynellidae species are distributed worldwide, with recorded occurrences in North and South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. They inhabit freshwater systems with stable temperatures and low light conditions, often residing in the interstitial water of sediments, caves, and artesian wells. Their ecological role includes the breakdown of organic detritus and serving as prey for specialized subterranean predators.
Reproduction Reproductive strategies vary among genera, but most bathynellids are ovoviviparous, retaining eggs within the female’s brood pouch until they hatch. Development is direct, with juveniles resembling miniature adults.
Research significance Due to their specialized habitats, bathynellids are valuable indicators of groundwater quality and ecosystem health. Their presence or absence can reflect changes in subterranean water chemistry, pollution levels, and hydraulic connectivity. Additionally, they contribute to the understanding of evolutionary adaptations to extreme environments and the biogeography of cryptic freshwater fauna.
