Barsuk Records

Barsuk Records is an independent record label headquartered in Seattle, Washington, United States. The label was founded in 1998 by Christopher Possanza and Josh Rosenfeld, who were members of the band This Busy Monster, with the initial purpose of releasing material by their own band.

Name and Logo
The label’s name derives from the Russian word барсук (barˈsuk), meaning “badger.” It is also named after a black Labrador owned by Possanza and collaborator Jason Avinger; recordings of the dog barking appear on two This Busy Monster tracks, “Song 69” and “Time to Sleep.” The label’s logo depicts a dog holding a vinyl record in its mouth.

Musical Focus and Influence
Barsuk Records primarily releases music in the indie rock, indie pop, and alternative genres. In its early years, the label played a significant role in shaping the mainstream perception of indie rock, issuing notable albums such as Nada Surf’s Let Go, The Long Winters’ When I Pretend to Fall, and Death Cab for Cutie’s influential fourth album, Transatlanticism.
