Barry Richmond

Barry Richmond (February 12, 1945 – June 16, 2012) was an American computer scientist, educator, and systems‑thinking author best known for developing the Stella™ system dynamics modeling software and for his contributions to the field of system dynamics education.

Early life and education
Born in New York City, Richmond earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1966. He continued at MIT for graduate studies, receiving a Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1971. His doctoral research focused on interactive graphics and simulation, laying groundwork for later work in visual modeling environments.

Academic career
After completing his doctorate, Richmond joined the faculty of Cornell University’s Department of Computer Science, where he taught from 1971 to 1984. During this period he co‑authored several influential papers on computer‑aided design, simulation, and educational software.

Stella and system dynamics
In 1985, Richmond founded the software company isee Systems (later known as isee, Inc.), where he led the development of Stella, a visual modeling environment for system dynamics. Stella enabled users to construct, simulate, and analyze feedback‑driven systems through diagrammatic representations, making system dynamics more accessible to educators, students, and practitioners. The software became a standard tool in undergraduate and graduate curricula worldwide and was instrumental in expanding the application of system dynamics to fields such as environmental management, public policy, and business strategy.

Publications and professional service
Richmond authored and co‑authored numerous books and articles, including Systems Thinking: Creative Holism for Managers (1993) and System Dynamics Modeling: Using Stella (1999). He served on the editorial boards of several journals, including System Dynamics Review, and held leadership positions in professional societies such as the System Dynamics Society, where he was elected Fellow in 2002.
