Barra de São Miguel is a municipality located in the state of Paraíba, in the Northeast region of Brazil. It forms part of the Sertão Paraibano mesoregion and is situated in the interior of the state, characterized by a semi‑arid climate typical of the sertão.
Geography
The municipality encompasses an area of roughly 115 km², according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). It lies at an elevation of about 400 meters above sea level and is traversed by minor tributaries of the larger Piranhas‑Açu river basin.
Demographics
IBGE’s 2020 census recorded a population of approximately 6 000–7 000 inhabitants, indicating a low population density relative to urban centers in the state. The demographic profile is predominantly of mixed European, African, and Indigenous ancestry, common throughout the Nordeste.
Economy
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and livestock. Small‑scale cultivation of beans, corn, and cassava, together with cattle and goat raising, constitute the main sources of income for residents. There is limited industrial activity, with most commercial services catering to the surrounding rural community.
History
Barra de São Miguel was originally a settlement founded during the colonial period, named after the nearby São Miguel River bend (“barra” meaning “river bend” in Portuguese). The locale was elevated to municipal status in the early 1990s, following a state legislative act that separated it from the neighboring municipality of Cacimbas.
Infrastructure
Transportation links consist mainly of regional roads that connect the municipality to larger highways leading to the state capital, João Pessoa. Basic public services include a municipal health clinic, elementary and secondary schools, and a small municipal administration building.
Culture
Cultural traditions reflect the broader sertão heritage, with religious festivals dedicated to Saint Michael (São Miguel) and folk music styles such as forró and xote playing a central role in community gatherings.
