Barnsley Football Club is a professional association football club based in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, England. Nicknamed "The Tykes," the club was founded on 12 September 1887 and plays its home matches at [[Oakwell Stadium]].

History

Barnsley F.C. was initially founded as Barnsley St. Peter's by a local clergyman, Tiverton Preedy. The club adopted its current name in 1897 and joined the [[Football League]] in 1890.

The club's most significant historical achievement came in 1912 when they won the [[FA Cup]], defeating [[West Bromwich Albion F.C.|West Bromwich Albion]] 1-0 in a replay after a goalless draw in the final. They had previously reached the FA Cup final in 1910, losing to [[Newcastle United F.C.|Newcastle United]].

Barnsley holds the record for spending the most seasons in the second tier of English football, demonstrating a long history of competitive presence, often moving between divisions. A notable period was their single season in the [[Premier League]] during 1997–98, their only top-flight appearance since the league's rebranding. More recently, the club has frequently competed in the [[EFL Championship]] and [[EFL League One]].

Barnsley F.C. has played at [[Oakwell]] since the club's formation. Located in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, the stadium has an all-seated capacity of 23,287. In addition to serving as the football club's home ground, Oakwell has also hosted various other sporting and community events.
