Barbara L. Craig (born 1943) is a Canadian archivist, scholar, and educator renowned for her contributions to archival theory and practice. She has served as a professor of archival studies at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) and has held leadership positions within professional archival organizations.
Education and Early Career
Craig earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Queen's University, followed by a Master of Library Science (MLS) from the University of Western Ontario. She began her professional career in the 1960s working as a librarian and archivist for various public and private institutions in Canada.
Academic and Professional Contributions
In 1995, Craig joined the faculty of the School of Library and Information Studies at UPEI, where she taught courses in archival theory, records management, and digital preservation. She is credited with developing curricula that integrated traditional archival principles with emerging digital technologies.
Craig’s scholarly work focuses on the theoretical foundations of archival practice, particularly the concept of provenance (the principle that records should be preserved according to their origin and original order).
