Definition
Banská Belá is a village and municipality situated in the Banská Štiavnica District of the Banská Bystrica Region in central Slovakia.
Overview
Banská Belá lies in the Štiavnica Mountains, approximately 12 km north‑west of the historic mining town of Banská Štiavnica. As of the most recent census data, the municipality has a population of around 2,600 inhabitants. The settlement developed around mining activities during the medieval period, particularly those related to copper and silver extraction. Today, the local economy is diversified, with agriculture, tourism, and small‑scale manufacturing contributing to its livelihood. Notable landmarks include the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin (dating from the 18th century) and a series of preserved traditional folk houses.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Banská Belá” derives from the Slovak word banská, meaning “mining” or “pertaining to mines,” reflecting the area's historic involvement in mineral extraction. The second element, Belá, is thought to originate from the Slovak adjective belý (white) or from the name of the nearby Belá River, which may have been so called because of its clear, light‑coloured water. Consequently, the name can be interpreted as “the mining settlement on the Belá (river).”
