Description
Banksia prionotes is an erect, woody shrub that typically reaches 1–2 m in height. It lacks a lignotuber and therefore is killed by fire, regenerating only from seed. The leaves are narrow, linear to lanceolate, 5–15 cm long and 2–5 mm wide, with a serrated (toothed) margin. Inflorescences are cylindrical spikes, 8–12 cm long, bearing numerous individual flowers that are initially yellow‑orange and age to a grey‑brown colour. The flowers produce a copious amount of nectar, attracting a variety of pollinators. The fruit are woody follicles that mature and open after fire or prolonged dry conditions, releasing winged seeds.

Distribution and habitat
Banksia prionotes is endemic to the south‑west of Western Australia. Its range extends from the Stirling Range eastward to the Fitzgerald River region, primarily on sandy or lateritic soils within kwongan heathland and low open woodland. The species is most commonly found on well‑drained, nutrient‑poor soils on sandplains and hill slopes.

Ecology

  • Pollination – The nectar‑rich inflorescences are visited by a range of nectar‑feeding birds (e.g., honeyeaters such as Meliphaga spp.) and mammals (e.g., the honey possum, Tarsipes rostratus). Insects, especially native bees, also forage on the flowers.
  • Fire response – As a non‑resprouting (obligate seeder) species, B. prionotes relies on seed release following fire for regeneration. Seeds are retained in the follicles for several years and are typically released when the follicles are opened by the heat of fire or by gradual drying.
  • Seed dispersal – Released seeds are wind‑dispersed; the winged nuts can travel short distances from the parent plant.

Conservation status
The Western Australian Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions lists Banksia prionotes as “Not Threatened” (2023). The species’ relatively wide distribution and occurrence in several protected reserves contribute to its stable status. Ongoing threats include habitat fragmentation from agricultural expansion and altered fire regimes.

Uses

  • Horticulture – The species is occasionally cultivated in native plant gardens and for restoration projects because of its striking flower spikes and attraction to wildlife. It requires well‑drained, low‑fertility soils and a sunny position.
  • Ecological restorationB. prionotes is used in revegetation of kwongan habitats, where it contributes nectar resources for pollinators and helps restore plant community structure.
