Francisco "Bamboo" Mañalac (born March 21, 1976) is a Filipino singer, songwriter, and musician best known as the former lead vocalist of the alternative rock band Rivervaya and the frontman of the eponymous band Bamboo. He has also pursued a solo career, releasing multiple studio albums and serving as a judge on Philippine reality television music competitions.
Early life and education
Francisco Mañalac was born in Manila, Philippines. He attended the Ateneo de Manila University, where he studied Business Management. While in college, he became involved in the local music scene, performing with several amateur bands.
Career
Rivervaya (1994–1998)
In 1994, Mañalac joined Rivervaya, a band formed by former Eraserheads bassist Buddy Zabala and guitarist Rico Blanco. As the group's lead vocalist, he contributed to the release of the band’s debut album Rivervaya (1997), which featured hit singles such as “214” and “Ulan”. Mañalac left Rivervaya in 1998, citing personal and creative differences.
Bamboo (2003–2011)
After a five‑year hiatus from the music industry, Mañalac returned as the frontman of the rock supergroup Bamboo, formed with guitarist Ira Cruz, bassist Nathan Azarcon, and drummer Vic Mercado. The band released three studio albums: As the Music Plays (2004), Tomorrow Becomes Yesterday (2006), and We Stand Alone Together (2007). Bamboo achieved commercial success, earning multiple awards from the Awit Awards and the MTV Pilipinas Music Awards. The group disbanded in 2011, with members pursuing individual projects.
Solo career (2011–present)
Mañalac launched his solo career with the debut album Sinag (2011), followed by No Water, No Moon (2017) and Hijo (2021). His solo work blends rock, pop, and soul influences, and has produced notable singles such as “Kaleidoscope” and “Midlife Crisis”. He has performed extensively across the Philippines and internationally, including appearances at the ASEAN Music Festival and the Singapore International Film Festival.
Television and other endeavors
From 2015 to 2021, Mañalac served as a judge on the Philippine reality singing competition The Voice of the Philippines, mentoring several contestants who later achieved chart success. He also co‑hosts the talk show Kaleidoscope on TV5, focusing on music and culture.
