Etymology/Origin The municipality was originally named Bigaa (or Bigaa) after the native plant Pandanus simplex, commonly referred to as "bigaa," which once flourished in the area. In 1966, the name was officially changed to Balagtas in honor of Francisco Balagtas (also known as Francisco Baltazar), one of the most prominent figures in Philippine literature and the author of the epic poem "Florante at Laura." Francisco Balagtas was born in the nearby town of Panginay, which is now part of Balagtas, on April 2, 1788.
Characteristics Balagtas is characterized by a mix of rural and semi-urban landscapes, with agricultural lands dedicated to rice, vegetables, and other crops coexisting with residential subdivisions and commercial establishments. The municipality is accessible via major roads such as the San Fernando–Baliwag Road and is connected to transport networks leading into Metro Manila.
The local government promotes civic participation and development through various programs in education, health, and infrastructure. The Roman Catholic faith is predominant, and the town celebrates its fiesta annually in honor of its patron saint.
Balagtas is notable for its historical and cultural landmarks, including the Francisco Balagtas Shrine (Balagtas Monument), which commemorates the birthplace of the national poet.
