Bakovci is a settlement in the Municipality of Murska Sobota in the Prekmurje region of northeastern Slovenia. It lies at an elevation of 188 m above sea level and covers an area of 8.95 km². According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, the population was 1,445 in 2025, giving a density of approximately 160 inhabitants per square kilometre. Name and etymology
The Slovene name Bakovci appears historically in medieval documents as Barkouch (1323), Balkoch (1428), Barkoch (1436), Balkolcz (1455) and Barkowcz (1496). The Hungarian exonym for the settlement is Barkóc. According to Marko Snoj’s Etimološki slovar slovenskih zemljepisnih imen, the name likely derives from an earlier personal name or nickname, with early forms such as Balkovci indicating a patronymic origin.
Historical overview
The village was first recorded in 1323. Throughout its history it belonged to lower‑nobility families of the Prekmurje German (Prekmurje Nemeščaki) community. Notable noble families that held estates or resided in Bakovci include Keresztury, Rosty, Szmodis, Berke, Nagy, Hoszutothy, Harczan, Bornemissza, Posfay (Polak), Adelffy, Novak, Lipniczky and Gombossy. In 1690 the Habsburg monarch Leopold I granted the settlement, then known as Nagy‑Barkocz (Great Bakovci), to Peter Berke, a member of the local aristocracy; from this lineage emerged the notable Ogric noble family Barkoczy (also rendered Bakovski).
