Bakhmaro

Bakhmaro (Georgian: ბახმარო) is a village and mountain resort located in the Chokhatauri Municipality of the Guria region in western Georgia. Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,050 m (6,730 ft) above sea level, the settlement lies in a valley on the banks of the Bakhvistsqali River and is surrounded by spruce‑forested peaks ranging from 2,300 to 2,700 m.

Geography and Climate
The resort’s altitude and position within the Lesser Caucasus give it a mountain climate characterized by cool summers and significant snowfall in winter. Air masses from the Black Sea rise and mix with the high‑altitude air, a phenomenon that has historically been associated with therapeutic effects.

Population
According to the 2014 census, Bakhmaro had no permanent residents, reflecting its status primarily as a seasonal recreation and health destination.

Health Resort History
Bakhmaro has been promoted as a climatic health resort. In the early 20th century, medical practitioners recommended it for the treatment of respiratory ailments, tuberculosis, hemorrhage, and neurasthenia. Local tradition holds that a stay of 21 days is required to achieve the full therapeutic benefit. The resort’s health‑related use is most active from June to October, though proposals have existed since 1932 to develop winter facilities, and the Georgian government has considered converting Bakhmaro into a four‑season resort.

Access
Access to Bakhmaro is limited to mountain roads and footpaths. The most common route begins at the village of Mtispiri, involving a 28 km drive to a parking area, after which visitors continue on foot or by horse. Alternative approaches include footpaths from Khidistavi (29 km) and Vekhijvari (27 km). The terrain and weather conditions restrict travel to the resort primarily to the warmer months.

Infrastructure
The settlement consists mainly of wooden houses and facilities catering to tourists and health seekers. Unlike nearby Gomismta, which sits on a mountain ridge, Bakhmaro is nestled within a valley, giving it a distinct landscape and microclimate.

Current Status
While historically a popular summer retreat for Georgians, Bakhmaro’s tourism season remains relatively short, lasting about one and a half months. Ongoing discussions aim to expand its capacity and promote year‑round tourism, leveraging its natural scenery, clean air, and potential for winter sports.
