Definition
Baghel Singh (c. 1730 – 1802) was a Sikh military leader and political figure who played a prominent role in the late‑18th‑century Sikh confederacy (Dal Khalsa) and is noted for his successful campaigns against the Mughal Empire, culminating in the temporary capture and fortification of Delhi in 1783.
Overview
Born into the Baghel lineage of the Jat community in the Punjab region, Baghel Singh rose through the ranks of the Sikh militias during a period of heightened conflict between the Sikhs and the declining Mughal authority. Aligning himself with the influential Sikh confederacy known as the Dal Khalsa, he participated in numerous battles across northern India. In 1783, leading a contingent of Sikh forces alongside other Sikh sardars, Baghel Singh entered Delhi and erected several gurdwaras at historic Sikh sites, most notably at the site of Guru Nanak’s visit. Although the Sikh occupation of Delhi was brief, the construction of these shrines left a lasting religious and cultural imprint on the city. Baghel Singh continued to be an influential figure in Sikh political affairs until his death in 1802.
